Active Orthopedic Services (AOS) was founded in 2005 to address the needs of patients who were left without services as a result of the closure of St. Mary’s of the Lake Hospital Orthotics Department. Initially located in the Medical Arts Building, AOS expanded to a new state of the art facility in February 2010.
What is a Certified Orthotist?
A Clinical Certified Orthotist (CO) (c) has a minimum of eight years of education and practical training. Certified Orthotists work closely with physicians, therapists and their clients to design and fit the orthotic devices that will enhance a patient’s functional life. A Certified Orthotist treats patients of all ages, from infants to the elderly. Our Certified Orthotists are members in good standing with the Canadian Board for Certification of Prosthetists and Orthotists (CBCPO). They also have Departmental Assistant Status with Providence Care, St. Mary’s of the Lake Hospital.

Active Orthopedic Solutions’ comprehensive range of orthopedic solutions includes:
The field of orthotics involves the design, fabrication and fitting of orthoses (braces or splints) intended to prevent or correct deformities, protect a painful part of the body or improve the function of a weakened extremity.
The patient may be referred to one of our Certified Orthotists through a rehabilitation specialist, directly by his or her family physician, or may “self” refer (no initial referral required).
Many of the devices used long term are funded through the Ministry of Health Assistive Devices Program. Work place and private Group insurance plans will often cover a percentage of the cost of a device provided by a Certified Orthotist.
